We’ve had a busy bank holiday weekend and avoided most of the crowds, too.  Our first trip was to Hilliers Arboretum near Romsey, Hampshire.  We needed a place to shoot some pictures and, with the rhododendrons in bloom, this was the place to go.

After a couple of hours clicking away we moved on with around 300 picture to sort through. Check out the gorgeous bloom below;

Hilliers bloomFrom there, a short trip to Mottisfont Abbey, a National Trust property. The highlight there for me was the trompe l’oeil in the Whistler Room.  But almost as impressive was the faux marble in the long room – not just a panel or wall of faux marble blocks but the whole room. The experience was an inspiration for me to get the brushes out … again.

trompe at mottisfontThe weekend was rounded off with the purchase of some new brushes. Trompe l’oeil will have to wait for a while, I’ve got some folk art projects to complete first.
