Her pale face lay framed by the crisp white pillowcase. Candlelight cast shadows high on the walls. He held her hand gently, and looked at the faces of her family, waiting, wide-eyed at her bedside. None dared to speak, as if to do so would take her last breath.
In a dark corner of the room, the doctor packed away the ephemera of his trade. Everything he could do, he had done. They waited.
A chill crept around the room and the flame flickered, before them a wraithlike form rose from the bed, and its vaporous finger pointed its accusations.
